In a previous blog we discussed the ancient technique of Feng Shui and its modern day use in contemporary Interior Design.  We talked about the five elements of wood, fire, metal, water and earth and how important the balance of Yin and Yang energy is.  The energies of the five elements are balanced by using the energy map, called the Bagua Map, as a practical guide to know where, when and how much of any one element to use in a specific space for the best possible outcome.

The Bagua is a grid like map used in Feng Shui to help analyze the energy of your space.  It has nine different zones that represent different energies and the areas that those energies apply to in a home. Cheryl Grace describes the Bagua this way, “The Bagua map is shaped like a tic-tac-toe board, with three columns and three rows, divided into nine guas, or zones.  Eight guas revolve around the ninth or center gua, and each represents a different life aspect – as well as a life lesson you may need to learn in order to achieve balance. Each contains energy that resonates directly with what’s going on for you in that area.”

The map can be used as a template for your whole home or an individual room.  The center gua represents Health and Well-Being, represented by the Earth element and the eight “guas” surrounding it are: Wealth & Prosperity; Fame & Reputation; Love, Marriage & Relationships; Family & Relationships; Creativity & Children; Wisdom & Knowledge; Career & Life Purpose; and lastly Travel.  The easiest way to use the Bagua map is to line up the entry of your home or room with the bottom of the map, as if you are lying the map over the space.  The bottom of the map should align with the entryway of your space.

So, imagine you were going to Feng Shui your home, let’s say you wanted to focus on Wealth and Prosperity, which is in the left rear corner of the Bagua map and therefore the room that is in the left rear corner of your home.  As you can see in the Bagua Map diagram below, each gua has a color, element and shape that is associated with it.  The Wealth & Prosperity gua is related to the colors purple, green and gold, its element is Wood and its shape is a rectangle.  So, to implement Feng Shui to influence this area of your life, one of the easiest places to start would be to add the colors of purple, green and gold to the room.  You could hang paintings on the wall or add the colors through the use of material in the form of furniture, custom curtains and custom pillows.  What about adding a gold figurine to the space or wood elements, such as books on wood bookshelves or pictures in rectangular wood picture frames?

Using the Bagua map, you can begin to see how easily you could change the energy of your spaces and ultimately the energy of your life.  As always, remember it is your space and by following a few simple interior design tips, you really can have fun creating a home that may just change your life!

When Tioga Downs Casino asked us to help with custom window treatments throughout their new hotel, we were thrilled to create the best design to fit their style, budget, and timeframe.

hotelgoodAs you can image, the amount of fabric needed to provide custom drapes for an entire hotel is massive.  Timeframe was a challenge, as it can often take up to three months just to receive the amount of yardage needed.  Then ample time is still needed to fabricate, deliver, and install the drapes.   Coordinating all of this is an in-depth process.  Through our supplier relationships, we were able to source alternate fabrics that could be expedited to meet the timeframe and stay within the style and budget requirements.

For the hotel rooms, we sourced a beautiful shimmering sheer fabric that incorporates the colors and finishes throughout the rest of the room, adding vibrancy and cohesiveness to the space.  The blackout liner, in a lightly textured rich blue color, looks great on its own or as a backdrop to the sheer, enhancing its range of color.

To make the suites special, we sourced specific fabrics for only these spaces.  A drape fabric in a beautiful green-blue hue creates a sophisticated and relaxing environment.  While the neutral sheer adds to the softness of the spaces, filtering natural light into the living area and bedroom.

Summer is here and there are many ways you can welcome it into your house without breaking the bank.  If your goal is to make your space airier, brighter, or freshen things up the following tips will help.

Painting is always an inexpensive option. If you don’t like it, you can always redo it, right? Remember you can paint just one wall, instead of the entire room to freshen up the look. Whether an accent wall, or even painting shapes that define a space, this interior finish can transform a seemingly drab space into a fresh oasis.

Consider adding a mirror. Mirrors can illuminate any space and give it a little sparkle and airiness. They are an affordable option for updating any contemporary space and making it look more expansive, despite any architectural constraints.

Dark colored drapes in heavy fabrics, like velvet, for example, provide good heat insulation during winter, but don’t lend themselves to a light airy summer feel. Replacing your curtains is a sure way to make a huge impact in your space without a big investment.

Change up your accessories and fabrics. Swap dark colored accessories for light, wool throws for linen, down blankets for cotton and it will feel like summer instantly.  Texture plays a significant role not only in our sense of touch but to the eye as well.

Are you looking for a way to make your old dining room feel new again?  Making a few simple changes really can have big payoffs when it comes to updating your space.  Maybe you love your dining room furniture but the overall space seems dull, lacks definition and feels as if something is missing.  It is time for a change and you are ready; so, where do you begin?

dining-room-1

Something as simple as adding a new pair of curtains and changing the paint color can breathe new life into a space you have grown bored with.  Adding or updating fabric in your space really is one of the easiest ways to make the old feel new again.  It is a small change that can have a large impact on the overall design and feel of a room.  Adding fabrics to your dining room allows you to bring new color and texture into your space.  A great place to start is by designing a pair of custom curtains that you love. The entire design of the room can be inspired by and centered around these curtains.  Having a starting point for your design concept always makes it easier to build out the rest of the design elements.

When designing new custom curtains for your dining room, there are many things to consider and a great place to start is by asking yourself what kind of mood are you trying to set?  Do you want your space to feel formal or informal, romantic or whimsical, contemporary or traditional?  Will the curtains be decorative or do they need to be functional as well?  What colors and patterns might look good in the space?  Once you’ve answered these questions and found the perfect custom curtains you can begin to “build” your new room design, choosing paint color and complementary accents.

In today’s modern contemporary interior design with open living spaces, one room can blend into the next, getting lost in the vastness and lacking personality.  By adding fabrics in the form of contemporary curtains, custom pillows, table runners, or upholstered chairs you give your dining room definition through texture, pattern, or a pop of color.  It really can help distinguish the space from other areas in an open floor plan.

Fabrics, especially in the form of custom curtains, can set the tone for your space and can help to soften a room giving it that finished look you have been waiting for. Taking the old and making it feel new again, turning your dining room into a space you actually enjoy and want to spend some time in.  The bottom line is to trust your instincts, have fun decorating your home, it is your space and it should be a reflection of you and your style.  Interior Designer, Dorothy Draper said, “I believe in doing the thing you feel is right; if it looks right, it is right.”

Design elements and principles are the building blocks of all design disciplines.  They are what design decisions are based on.  In interior design, balance is one of the most important of these.  This design principle is often the difference between a room feeling pulled together or disheveled.

Balance is the distribution of visual weight.  When weight is spread evenly over an area, it appears balanced.  If all the furniture in a room was placed against one side of a room, it would appear very unbalanced.  Upon entering the room, you might feel unsettled by its unusual nature; balanced designs create a calming order to a space.

There are two types of balance, symmetrical and asymmetrical.  A symmetrical composition is like a mirror-image.  Since everything must strictly be identical in opposite placement, symmetry is sometimes called formal balance.

This photo shows a symmetrically balanced composition, created with the sofa, accent pillows, artwork, end tables, and lamps.  As you can see if you drew a line down the middle of the sofa, you would have a mirror image of identically placed items.

Asymmetrical balance is a composition with parts having similar visual weight without mirroring.  Asymmetry tends to be more interesting, dynamic, and casual, yielding the title of informal balance.

To create balance in your home, furniture should be well-distributed without rigid mirroring.  It is also extremely important to balance color and value throughout a space.  If you have dark colors on one side of a room and light on the other, the space will feel unpleasant.  Just as if you are using an accent color, be sure to carry it around the room so the eye will connect the color in an appealing, balanced way.

You can see in this photo how orange is used as an accent color and carried through the room in multiple locations to create asymmetrical balance.
