Fabric is a great way to add color, texture, and pattern to your space.  Fabric is commonly found in every room of a home in window treatments, upholstery, bedding, pillows, and many other elements.   With hundreds of fabric types and brands to choose from, fabric selection can be overwhelming if you are unsure of what to look for.  Before starting your fabric search, you need to think about the color scheme of the room, the desired texture and pattern, and the required durability for the application.

There are two broad categories of textiles: natural and synthetic.  Wool, cotton, linen, and silk are made from natural materials.  Synthetic, refers to man-made fibers, which are typically polyester, rayon, and nylon.  Sometimes natural and synthetic fibers are blended, for example blending cotton and polyester to create one fabric.

To choose a proper fabric to meet your needs and preferences, you should first consider the use of the fabric in your project.

Lightweight fabrics, such as organza and chiffon, are a popular choice for sheers, allowing some light to pass through to create a soft, light filtered atmosphere.  Drapery fabrics, which may be natural or synthetic will create more substantial window treatments and provide more options for pattern and color.

Upholstery fabrics are more durable than drapery fabrics to withstand the wear of frequent contact.  Leather upholstery can be a good option because it is easy to clean, durable, and available in many colors and finishes.  Heavier cottons, linens, and synthetics are also common choices that are available in many patterns and colors.  Numerous upholstery fabrics are available with a stain resistant treatment, so keep that in mind.

Many manufacturers are producing green fabric collections to support the sustainable movement, and more will continue to develop in the future.  Many of these are made from 100% recycled materials and environmentally-friendly dyes.  Fabrics made from natural materials (wool, cotton, linen, silk) are also more sustainable and should be favored above synthetic materials for an environmentally friendly space.  Durability is another sustainable consideration because materials that have a longer life need less frequent replacement and, therefore, create less waste over time.

Whether you are creating a window treatment or upholstering furniture, incorporating fabrics into your interior can add softness, sound absorption, and aesthetic style.  In our design projects we always consider how fabric will improve the function or feel of a space.  The kitchen is the room which typically has the least amount of fabric.  When we design kitchens we add fabric whenever possible to visually balance the hard surfaces and help with acoustics.  It is amazing the difference it can make!

Take a look into a Contemporary Kitchen Design by our PKB DESIGN team…

WHITE KITCHEN

These clients really live in their kitchen – cooking, entertaining, reading, paying bills, and so on.  They also keep a kosher kitchen, so the design details were extremely important.  First and foremost, they needed to maximize the storage for multiple sets of dishes, silverware, pots, and pans.  They also wanted a contemporary, white kitchen.

MODERN KITCHEN

We incorporated a full pantry wall to maximize storage and build in appliances for a clean look.  To further increase storage, cabinets were extended to the ceiling.   To eliminate the look of clutter, solid cabinet doors were specified and a streamlined hood was incorporated over the cooktop.

The high-gloss white cabinets, white quartz counters, and white stone and glass tile backsplash create a monochromatic, sleek design that will stand the test of time.  It is a beautiful, functional space to work or relax in.  The clients love spending time in their spectacular new kitchen.

Ever found the perfect piece of furniture to order, just to find out that not even one of the fabric choices work for you?

Don’t get discouraged if you can’t find the right fabric for your upholstered furniture – there is a solution!  It’s called C.O.M. or Customer’s Own Material.  Many furniture retailers don’t like to share this option as it makes the order a bit more complicated, but this is something we regularly specify and coordinate for our clients.

Graded-in fabrics, or fabrics offered through furniture manufacturers are typically not high-style.  They are usually very common textiles that appeal to a wide range of people.  Which is understandable as manufacturers can’t afford to stock specific fabric that only a small percentage of customers will purchase.  This is why most people’s furniture looks the same as their neighbors.  The good news is, you don’t have to settle for the ho-hum fabric options offered, you can bring a custom element to your pieces and let your style shine!

As most quality furniture manufacturers are willing to upholster their furniture pieces with fabric you send them, the C.O.M. process is fairly straight forward.  It’s a matter of verifying with the manufacturer that the fabric you want to use is appropriate for the piece.  Once you have their approval for the specific fabric they will provide the yardage based on the repeat of the fabric and an address to send the fabric to.  It’s that easy!

A couple of things to keep in mind:

  1. Be sure your fabric is suitable for upholstery, many lightweight fabrics are not.
  2. Be sure your fabric is of high quality, so it will last.
  3. Going C.O.M. might cost slightly more as you purchase the fabric separately, pay to ship it to the manufacturer, and pay the base price for the piece of furniture.
  4. An extended delivery time is common, due to the fact that the manufacturer will not put your piece into production until your fabric is received.
  5. C.O.M. is one of the best ways to customize your furniture and show your unique style!
