As interior designers, we have seen time and time again the difference quality custom curtains make in a room.  They can take a space from ordinary to extraordinary; unfortunately, this is one of the elements that often gets overlooked.

Why design custom curtains, what’s the value?

When you enter a room, the drapes are one of the first elements seen.  They are at eye level, often extending from floor to ceiling.  They are a huge component of the room and immediately set the feeling of the space.  If you design contemporary curtains, visitors will immediately sense the contemporary style of your space.

The fabric of custom curtains adds softness, texture, possibly color or pattern as well as acoustical value.  It’s amazing how much echo is reduced by the addition of drapes.

Now I know what you are thinking, “I can get texture, color, pattern, and acoustical value with ready-made curtains from my local store, why would I want custom curtains?”

There are some major quality differences between typical retail curtains and custom curtains.

  1. LINING: Many retail options have either low-quality liner or none at all. You always want your drapes to be lined to protect them from sun damage, help them keep their shape, be able to see the fabric during the day when light is behind it, and for a fuller look.
  2. FABRIC: Nothing will kill the look of a room quicker than cheap looking curtain fabric. Curtains are a dominant element in a space, if they look cheap, your room will look cheap.
  3. HEMS: Double fold hems will keep your hemline true while improving the overall structure of the curtain. Single fold hems are common in the retail market.
  4. WEIGHTS: Quality drapes include weighted hems, again improving the overall structure of the drape and preventing ends from curling up or moving every time someone walk by them.
  5. THREAD: Curtains should always have color matched fabric thread. Unfortunately, cheap clear plastic thread has become common in the retail market, which falls out easily, unraveling the drapes.
  6. FIT: Installing the right size curtain is essential to add aesthetic value to your space. We often see curtains that are much too small for the window, which ends up detracting from the space rather than improving it.

So, what do these differences mean for you?

Quality construction means your drapes will last longer.  They won’t quickly fade from the sun, or lose their structure, sagging and unraveling from poorly constructed seams.  The return on your investment is strong.  You can feel confident that your drapes will hold up and look great, right up until you are ready to change the style.

When you design quality custom curtains, you are receiving curtains that improve your space, add a sense of luxury, define your style, add much needed softness, and elevate the overall design of the room immeasurably.

When you design custom curtains, there is a huge price range, depending on the fabric and style.  We recommend you do your research and find the options that best fit your budget and style requirements.   In this day and age, you can even easily design custom curtains online.  If you decide to design custom curtains online, be sure to get fabric samples to see in your space – do not order just from a picture online.  The fabric will likely look very different when you see it in person.

Whether you design custom curtains online or work with a local designer, your custom curtains will have a huge impact on the function, look, and feel of your space.  It is an element you never want to underestimate.

Now that you have your beautiful custom draperies installed, are you wondering how to care for them?  Care and cleaning of custom draperies is easy if you know the basics.  The first part of taking care of your drapes is to keep the dust off of them.  Every time you dust or vacuum your space, be sure to shake your drapes to gently remove the dust.  This simple task goes a long way in keeping custom curtains looking great.

There are two options for basic at-home cleaning of custom draperies.  One is to vacuum them in place with a soft brush attachment and the other is to put them in your dryer.  For a more thorough cleaning, your custom curtains can be professionally dry cleaned.  You can take them to your local dry cleaner or hire an in-home drapery cleaning service.

Here are more details on each of these custom draperies care and cleaning techniques:

1. On a regular basis, give them a gentle shaking; this will prevent dust and dirt from lodging in the fibers.

2. Occasionally vacuum your custom draperies with a handheld vacuum and soft brush attachment. Use the low-suction setting if your vacuum has one. Depending on your dust conditions, cooking habits, and other factors you may wish to vacuum your drapes every two to four months.

3. For more thorough cleaning, remove the custom curtains from the rods and place them into the dryer. Set the dryer to a no-heat cycle and allow the drapes to tumble for about 30 minutes. This action will loosen trapped dust particles from the fabric fibers. As you remove the drapes from the dryer, shake them well to remove as much loosened dust as possible.

4. For a deep clean or spot/stain removal, remove custom draperies from rod and have them professionally dry cleaned or hire a professional cleaning company to dry clean your drapes in place. Depending on your dust conditions, cooking habits, and other factors you may wish to have your custom curtains dry cleaned every 1-3 years.

If spot stains occur, it’s important to remove them as quickly as possible to prevent them from setting. Many spot-cleaning solutions could leave a ring around the stain, making a more noticeable stained area on your custom draperies. To remedy this issue, dry-clean the entire drape instead of just the spot.

Follow these simple instructions for the care and cleaning of custom draperies and your custom curtains will add beauty to your space for years to come.

See how the PKB DESIGN team transformed a traditional house into a contemporary home…

contemporary-living-room

When long time clients told us they were building a new home, we were so happy for them and excited to be a part of their project.  We had designed multiple projects for them over the years and we knew our client’s contemporary style well.  The big surprise came when they told us they were building a traditional center hall colonial.  “What?  But you love contemporary design!”

So the challenge began, how do we make a very traditional styled house a contemporary home the client would love?

First thing we did was get our hands on the floor plan, so we could see how to start opening up those closed off rooms.  We completely removed the wall between the dining room and foyer and greatly expanded the opening between the dining room and kitchen.

To open up the living room, we removed a good portion of the wall between the living room and foyer, exposing the staircase.  We also completely removed the wall between the living room and family room to create a great room.

In the original house plans, the kitchen was quite small with a very traditional breakfast nook.  We transformed the breakfast nook into a bar area that was a natural extension of the kitchen and created a huge custom island with plenty of seating.

contemporary-kitchen-islandWe looked at every element going into the space and shifted to more contemporary options for light fixtures, doors, plumbing fixtures, cabinetry, fireplace, flooring, and so on.  The result is a space that people are stunned by when they enter, it feels nothing like a center hall colonial!

Custom drapes are an important component to finishing any interior space.  They can help define the style of a room, add needed texture, color, pattern, and serve as an architectural element.  Both the function and aesthetics of a space can be completely altered with the addition of the right custom drapes.

contemporary-drapes

Just like other interior elements, determining the right type of window treatment is a comprehensive process of asking the right questions.  Is there a need for light control, privacy, heat control, improved acoustics, or insulation?  Will the treatments be opened and closed daily or will they be stationary?  How does the window that they will be covering operate – will the treatment interfere with it?  How high are the ceilings?  Do you want the drape to extend floor to ceiling?  Are there any vents, heating units, or other potential obstructions near the windows?

After determining the function, the decorative purpose needs to be evaluated.  Do you want visible hardware on your custom drapes, such as grommets or rings?  What style and finish of rods are right for you?  Do you prefer the drapes blend or contrast with the walls?  How will color and pattern best complement your space?

pink-curtains

After you have a direction on the function and style, you will want to determine how to have your custom drapes fabricated.  Will you work in person with a designer or design your own drapes online?  It’s easier than ever before to design custom drapes online. Look for clear measuring guidelines, straightforward installation instructions, and an easy step by step order process if you decide to design your own drapes online.  Whichever option you choose, be sure you have asked yourself these questions before you start to look.  Without a direction on function and style, it can be completely overwhelming to design custom drapes.

The architecture of your home, the type of window, and the style of your furnishings all need to be considered when you design custom drapes.  Window treatments should be an extension of the existing interior.  A room that is well balanced allows the eye to travel harmoniously throughout the space without an over emphasis on one element.  A well-designed window treatment will not dominate a space, but complement it.
